Traffic Services

Purpose

Traffic Services is responsible for the following:

  • street and traffic sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance;
  • roadway striping application and maintenance;
  • crosswalk, road messages, and curb marking applications and maintenance;
  • sidewalk concrete grinding program;
  • traffic and pedestrian studies; and
  • snow removal on city bridge sidewalks.

Standardization Improves Safety

Traffic Services follows traffic control device standards set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which was created by the federal government to ensure there is consistency in traffic control device design across the country.

These standards contribute to safer driving because they help drivers recognize signage by color and shape. Consistency in pavement marking color, layout, and design also help drivers know information such as where driving lanes and bike lanes are located, where they can pass other cars, where they should stop at a stop sign or traffic light, where pedestrians are expected to cross, and so on.

Although the MUTCD has been in use for 80 years, its standards adapt to meet the changing needs of the traveling public.
